All Ribboned Out puts finishing touch on young kids' outfits

If you can personalize something or put a ruffle on it, All Ribboned Out Children’s Boutique and Custom Embroidery will.

“Right now, we’re cranking out ruffled pants,” said owner S’te Elmore, who along with daughter Jeanne McMillan sews many of the items sold in the cheery turquoise, red and white store.

“We like to add ruffles to things,” McMillan said.

A pair of dogtags hangs off the “p” in “Spankin.” The tops can be matched with pants, skirts or diaper covers in camo fabric for all branches of the service.

“We get a lot of military orders,” McMillan said. “It’s very hard to find things to do with the military.”

Customized birthday outfits also are big sellers, including onesies with “I’m 1” embroidered on them or diaper covers decorated with cupcakes or candles.

Elmore, whose first name S’te is pronounced like the letters “S” and “T,” grew up in a small town in Oregon and learned to sew in high school home economics class. The mother of nine children, ranging in age from 6 to 23, she started making kids’ clothes out of necessity and a desire to create matching outfits for her clan, which often includes a couple of foster children.

“I love to do it,” she said. “I wanted them to look cute, and it’s definitely more affordable to do it myself.”

People asked her where she got her kids’ clothes and a business idea was born. Her first big sellers were hairbows and “Remember Me” pillows featuring photos of deployed parents. She added clothes and blankets, peddling her creations online through the craft marketplace Etsy.

Etsy, which has given many home sewers like Elmore a low-cost sales platform is a big business, with 1 million virtual storefronts expected to do $1 billion in business this year, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.

There are no figures on how many of those businesses go on to add a physical store. But in Kitsap, Elmore is following the path of other small businesses such as Grounds for Change, which started online and developed its products before venturing into a brick-and-mortar space.

Elmore said she was ready to expand so that she could have more interaction with customers and be able to answer questions and show fabric choices and samples of her work.Religious convictions might prevent you from purchasing such a dress high fashion leg garters perhaps your parents or personal shyness makes these dresses off limits. Two years ago, she bought her first embroidery machine and got enough orders that she bought a second one six months later.
